Hardwood Flooring Guide

Everyday life merges with luxury when natural hardwood flooring enters the picture. Long considered by many to be the ultimate flooring medium, hardwood is truly the real deal with its telltale visuals and texture. Acquired by Mother Nature and perfected by modern-day technology, hardwood flooring has tons to offer and if cared for properly, can last for generations.

Adding tremendous value to your property, there’s a lot to love when it comes to hardwood flooring. It creates dimension by providing the appearance of additional space, brings warmth and depth, and can outlast many competitors. Still, hardwood flooring isn’t the best choice for every space. It can represent a hefty investment, and it simply isn’t compatible with heavy moisture. So, like any long-term investment, it’s very important to do some research before embarking on your journey to ensure you’ll have absolutely no regrets in the years to come.

Expert Advice - Hardwood Styles

Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some information on the all the different looks and style available in hardwood floors.

Solid Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood

Solid hardwood flooring used to be the only hardwood choice, plain and simple. Not so anymore, as modern times have given us additional options, even making it possible to enjoy genuine hardwood in spaces where it once wasn’t possible. How does this happen? The introduction of engineered hardwood has allowed hardwood flooring to boldly go where it has never gone before.

While the traditional solid hardwoods, which are simply solid wood planks, cannot go below grade or in high-splash zones, engineered hardwood is another story. Although engineered hardwood is also made entirely of wood, its sturdy layers bring much added density and durability. Engineered hardwood can be used in finished basements and other below-grade spaces, and tends to be less expensive.

Hardwood Species

Life is all about choices, and with hardwood flooring, your choices are, literally, as varied as the trees in the world’s forests. There’s hardwood flooring varieties that are sourced from all types of wood, including both exotic and domestic. Depending on your tastes and budget, there are options to suite all your needs, including flooring made from pine, oak, chestnut, maple, bamboo, teak, cork, mahogany, and cherry.
